Common causes of lower back pain

Low back pain is by far one of the most common ailments ever experienced. Just about everyone deals with low back pain at one point. It is estimated that 80 % of all Americans experience lower back pain some time in their lives. It is also one of the most common reasons people miss work and is the second most common reason people visit the doctor’s office. There are three main types of back pain:
  • Acute Back Pain: The most common type of back pain. This is a temporary pain that goes away in less than three months.
  • Recurrent Back Pain: When acute back pain goes away for a while but returns on a regular basis, it is known as recurrent back pain.
  • Chronic Back Pain: If back pain lasts longer than three months without subsiding, it is classified as chronic.
Acute back pain is typically not serious and usually goes away independently. However, recurring and chronic back pain can be signs of more serious health problems.  The cause of back pain is not always easily identifiable. However, conditions commonly linked to low back pain include muscle or ligament strain, bulging or ruptured discs, arthritis, and osteoporosis. In other cases, back pain can develop as a result of an injury, overuse, or a sedentary lifestyle.

How can physiotherapy help my back pain?

Physiotherapy is an excellent resource for lower back pain because it addresses the cause of the pain rather than simply attempting to hide the symptoms.  Working with a physiotherapist can help you experience an improved range of motion, restore strength to muscles in your lower back, and reduce tension in your lower back muscles through targeted manual therapies. According to the evidence on back pain, physiotherapy treatments are effective for acute and chronic conditions. Physiotherapy remains the first-line treatment and should be routinely used to get impactful results. Physiotherapy treatments that are most effective for lower back pain include:
  • Manual therapy
  • Joint mobilization/manipulations
  • Exercise instruction (i.e., targeted stretches, strengthening, and mobility work)
  • Education and instruction for understanding what helps and what hurts
  • Techniques like the McKenzie Method and Therapeutic Yoga

Did you know that approximately 22 million Americans visit a chiropractor each year? If you are already seeing a physiotherapist to restore your functional potential, you may not realize how chiropractic care can also be integrated in the same treatment plan for optimum results.   While our physiotherapists focus on reducing your pain and increasing your mobility so you may maintain an active lifestyle, chiropractic care can restore spinal alignment and uninterrupted nerve flow to the rest of your body, enhancing your overall health. Many find they recover faster and sustain wellness longer when integrating chiropractic care with other specialties like physiotherapy. At Creekwood Physiotherapy, you have the option of integrating chiropractic care with your existing physiotherapy plan, based on your condition and individual needs.  A chiropractor is extensively trained in adjusting the spine and extremity joints with manipulation and mobilization techniques.   If you are interested in learning how the combination of chiropractic care and physiotherapy can positively impact your health and wellness, contact Creekwood Physiotherapy today!
